Last week, we reported about Piaggio India bringing in the Moto Guzzi brand of motorcycles. Now, we’re learning that the newly set up Aprilia dealership at Gurgaon, Northward Motors, the second only dealership of that brand after the first one at Pune, is taking bookings for the Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 naked sportsbike. The first deliveries of this motorcycle is expected to happen sometime in 2013. Aprilia dealerships in India are expected to sell both Aprilia as well as Moto Guzzi motorcycles.

In the coming months, Piaggio India is expected to announce the full range of Moto Guzzi motorcycles that will be sold in the Indian premium motorcycle space.

Coming to the first Moto Guzzi offering for India, the Griso 1200, the motorcycle comes with a 1,200cc V-Twin engine that is an air cooled unit. This motorcycle comes with four valve heads and fuel injection, these features adding a modicum of technology to the otherwise retro engine design. The motor pumps out a peak power of 110 Bhp at 7,500 rpm and a peak torque of 110 Nm.

The V-Twin engine is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and comes with a kerb weight of 222 kilograms. Given that the V-Twin makes plenty of torque, all the heft will be well taken care of.

With a high ground clearance of 185mm, the Moto Guzzi Griso 1200 promises to be quite a capable sportsbike. The Griso 1200 is expected to be priced at over INR 10 lakhs as it will be imported into the country as a completely built unit. Also, since the motorcycle comes with a distinct European lineage, its cost is expected to be much higher than the Japanese imports.

The only real competition to the Griso 1200 will come from the likes of sports cruisers like the Harley Davidson V-Rod and the Ducati Diavel even as the rest of the naked sportsbikes like the Yamaha FZ1 and the Honda CB1000R have a different character altogether.

The Indian premium motorcycle segment is constantly ushering in new brands with a range of motorcycle options for the well heeled Indian biker to pick and choose from. The Griso 1200 is one such unconventional motorcycle that will stand out from the various other choices that the Indian motorcyclist now has. Expect Moto Guzzi to line up more motorcycles in the coming months including its entry level range in the form of the V7 range of every day motorcycles.

The Moto Guzzi V7 range is expected to compete with the upcoming Triumph Bonneville range.
