Yamaha XT 660 R Supermotard

[. ] I had the chance, a few weeks ago, to take a Yamaha MT-03 for a quick spin. As far as I know Yamaha has used the engine from the XT 660 and put it in a more modern sci-fi-like chassis. If you?ve read my opinion on the XT 660, you will now that I was thrilled by its high fun factor. [. ] [. ] Is the day where a 1000ccm sport bike was the wet dream of every young bike nut beginning to see an end? 400ccm to 650ccm single and twin cylindered supermotos, flat trackers and street fighters are starting to pop up everywhere. Right now most of them are custom builds or kit bikes, like the Ron Wood Rotax Flat Track Motorcycles.

But some of the manufacturers has jumped the band wagon and sent out factory made fun packages ex. Yamaha?s XT660x, MT-03 and Suzuki?s DR-Z400SM, not to mention the wicked Husqvarna SM 610. [. ]

I have the xt660x, have owned it forjust over a year now and clocked up 12000 miles, its a great all rounder, and however short or long the ride it just brings the devil out in ya everytime those exhausts start thumpin!

If you could clarify what it is you experience as slow, I will look into it.

I’m glad that they brough back the XT series. The only problem that I really see. Is if you take it on serious off roading is the exhaust pipe routing. The old Honda CR Elsinor’s ran the pipe under the frame like this and they sometimes go flattened out.

If you run across a short serious dip with a few rocks you are running a chance of smashing the header pipe. In my opinion the pipe should be ran higher near the head but not too close. Similar to the XT’s from the 70′s and 80′s.

Other than this it appears to be a pretty nice bike.

I just have a aluminium shield under the bike to protect the exhaust pipes.

Is there any aftermarket vendor for an exhaust pipe that does not go underneath the engine. The Tenere version has one.

I have an MZ Baghira which am sure you all know uses the XT660 engine. I can confirm that these engines are great fun and thumpy till the red line.

However mine has developed (very Suddenly) a loud clattering form the engine. it still runs but sounds like a bag of spanners. Has anyone experienced this before? is my engine totally wrecked or is it something else.

Excellent site! much success to you

Man, you are lucky to get the XT600. Here in the states, it’s XR600L, the sleepy Suzuki DR600, VStrom 600, and Kawasaki KLR650. Honda’s new 700 Adventure bike with a sticker of about $7,000US looks to be a great new offering.

MZ reborn?

Funny that the Honda XR650L has been around forever in every market everywhere…maybe why everyone ignores it. Tires come in all configurations so you can make it a supermoto for under $300 US.
