I haven’t been in this Forum for quite time and I remembered how knowledgeable and kind everyone was so thought I’d reach out for some help. I’ve searched and read thru a lot of posts regarding my problem and have tried many of the suggestions. Here’s my issue:

Got an 82 PW50 (paid -75) that mostly looked like it needed wiring harness replaced which I did. Bike started right up after swapping wires and ran and idled fantastically. Didn’t let my 6 year old ride it right away as I wanted to change the brakes and install the throttle screw (safety).

Did all that and now the things starts and only sputters and will not reach even moderate rpms. Here’s what I’ve done since then:

Cleaned all wires Cleaned ignition coil Changed plug cap (old one had bad continuity) Changed plug (2x) Disconnected oil pump and tried premix (reconnected and drained premix) Disconnected throttle switch wiring (and reconnected) Trimmed back spark plug wire Checked resistance in ignition coil (my manual doesn’t have ohm values but there’s continuity) Directly connected wiring from coil to harness (corrode plug coming from coil)

I’m pretty knowledgeable with dirt bikes but confess I have virtually no experience with electronics and electrical system issues, I’ve never had an electrical problem on any bike I’ve ever owned. To me it seems like an electrical system problem as it sounds like it’s missing or the timing is off but I’m certainly not positive it’s either. The frustrating part is the problem seemed to come out of the clear blue sky. it had been running perfectly.

Sorry for the wordy post I’m normally concise. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations as my lil guy was soo excited to get in the back yard and learn to ride. Thanks for your time and attention.

I would bet it is the start/run/stop switch or the connection just down from it. Sounds like it is on start in which it will fire but not rev (and when you try to rev it it misses like crazy)

Thanks Mark. Now that I think of it that is how the start mode behaves. I did try it with the connector disconnected but maybe somehow the circuit is getting crossed or grounded that has it doing that.

I’ll check the wiring diagram in more detail and see if I can find anything.

I forgot to mention that I had disconnected the exhaust to se if it was perhaps clogged but it didn’t effect its poor performance.

There was something else I tried but it escapes me.

Thanks again

Ok I’ve tried everything I know to do and I can’t get this thing to run. It has spark, fuel flows through carb, compression about 110 psi. this thing is driving me crazy-

Can someone PLEASE offer some suggestions? The only issue I found is a reading of 185 ohms at the charging coil, spec is 297-363 I think but it does spark nonetheless. The bike ran perfectly when I got it, all I did was change out the wiring harness (the one with it was badly frayed) and it started up then ran absolutely perfect.

Now I cannot get it to run at all and when it does start it’s only for a few moments.

Can someone please assist. if I’m not following etiquette or breaking protocol please assist me in that matter, I simply need help with my kids bike. Thanks.
