2005 KTM SMC 625

The 2005 KTM SMC was one of the on-off-road motorcycles that Austrian motorcycle/bicycle/moped manufacturer KTM Sportmotorcycle AG produced for the 2005 model year. The SMC was manufactured as a lone model, called the KTM SMC 625. The numerical suffix stands for its engine displacement, which KTM measures at 625 cubic centimeters.

Powering each 2005 KTM SMC is a four-stroke, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, with four valves on the cylinder. It generates 28.1 horsepower at 6,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and 30.2 pound-feet of torque at 3,250 RPM. Also, the engine has a bore and stroke of 101 x 78 millimeters (3.98 x 3.07 inches) and a compression ratio of 11.7 to 1. A 41-millimeter Keihin carburetor fuels the engine, which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

A manual kick starter and a more convenient electric starter go on the 2005 KTM SMC to provide the driver with two ignition options. Completing the SMC’s powertrain is a chain drive. Fuel capacity on the 2005 SMC peaks at 2.4-gallon (9.2-liter) gas tank, with a 0.7-gallon (2.4-liter) reserve.

Each 2005 KTM SMC uses Brembo® disc brakes, which are superior to the all-wheel drum braking and front-disc-brake rear-drum-brake systems. They consist of a 12.6-inch (320-mm) disc at the front; and a smaller, 8.7-inch (220-mm) disc at the back. The suspension on the 2005 KTM SMC is comprised of a 1.9-inch (43-mm) inverted fork and twin-sided swing arm with shock absorber for lessening turbulence on rougher terrain.

Each 2005 SMC rides on 17-inch wheels wrapped in tubed tires.

Like several KTM motorcycles, the 2005 SMC’s frame is made of chromium and molybdenum for making the bike relatively light while maintaining firmness. To cover vital parts for safety and style, the bike has front and rear fenders; side covers; and fork, hand, and chain guards. A one-piece vinyl seat provides enough room for the driver and a passenger to sit.

The 2005 SMC has a kick stand for parking, and it uses an orange scheme with decal kit for its exterior color finish.

Digital instrumentation on the 2005 KTM SMC consists of a trip odometer and speedometer. KTM installed a halogen headlight and a pair of rearview mirrors on the bike for enhanced visual perception when driving.

The 2005 KTM SMC has a wheelbase of 59.5 inches (1,510 mm). The ground clearance and seat height are measured at 11 inches (280 mm) and 35.8 inches (910 mm), respectively. The 2005 KTM SMC has a dry weight of 321.9 lbs. (146 kilometers).

With its emphasis on riding on various types of terrain, the 2005 KTM SMC is similar to the SXC, another on-off-road bike that KTM released for the 2005 model year. However, the SMC is heavier, has a lower seat height and smaller wheels, and uses bigger disc brakes. Also, it lacks the lap timer of the SXC.

Performance enthusiasts who don’t mind the added weight might want to check out the SMC instead of the SXC; otherwise the latter is for riders who are more racing-oriented.
