For the 2012 model year, Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM released two models of the TE off-road bike under its Husaberg subdivision. The TE 250 is the lower-level trim, with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $7,899. The upper-level TE 300 is only one hundred dollars more expensive. As an off-road bike, the 2012 Husaberg TE is optimized for driving on unpaved terrain.
However, it can also be used on conventional, paved roads.
Each 2012 Husaberg TE is powered by a two-stroke liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine, with a reed intake valve train. However, as indicated by the distinctive three-digit suffixes, the engine differs in displacement depending on model. The TE 250 engine displaces at 249 cubic centimeters (rounded up to 250), while the engine on the TE 300 displaces at 293.2 cubic centimeters (rounded up to 300).
Moreover, the TE 250 engine has a bore and stroke of 2.61 x 2.83 (66.4 x 72 millimeters), while that of the TE 300 engine is 2.83 x 2.83 inches (72 x 72 mm).
Fueled by a 36-mm Keihin carburetor, the engine on the 2012 Husaberg TE is harnessed to a six-speed manual transmission. A gas tank that can hold up to 2.9 gallons (11 liters) was installed on each bike.
For its stopping power, the 2012 Husaberg TE uses all-wheel hydraulic Brembo® disc brakes, which consist of a 10.2-inch (260-mm) one at the front and an 8.7-inch (220-mm) one at the back. The suspension on the 2012 TE consists of a thick 1.9-inch (48-mm) telescopic fork and a twin-sided aluminum swing arm with shock absorber for a smooth and controlled ride.
The 2012 Husaberg TE’s frame is made out of a mixture of chromium and molybdenum. KTM uses these materials to give the bike a lightweight yet firm build. In addition to the customary front and rear fenders, the TE has heel, hand, exhaust, and fork guard to protect delicate parts of the bike or prevent possible harm to its driver.
A lap timer dominates the TE’s digital dashboard, and a halogen headlight provides enhanced visibility when driving at night.
Each 2012 Husaberg TE has a wheelbase of 58.1 inches (1,475 mm) and ground clearance of 15.2 (385 mm). The TE 250 model has a dry weight of 226.9 lbs. (102.9 kilograms). The TE 300 is slightly heavier, with a dry weight of 227.3 lbs. (103.1 lbs.).
For those looking for an off-road bike with more advanced features, there are better choices out there. However, the 2012 Husaberg TE is particularly appealing to customers who treasure a bike that is relatively lightweight, has more-than-decent braking and handling, and can hold its own on rough terrain.
