Cagiva Elefant Lucky Explorer 900ie 1990 – the authenic, genuine, sought-after EFI model.
(INFO DISPONIBLE EN FRANCAIS AUSSI – faites moi signe par email.)
Surely one of the best Ducatis ever built. High-quality construction, many original ideas, well thought-out concept.
Drives fantastic, torquey, comfortable and fast – these were truly brilliant bikes.
Two owners from new, same owner last 11 years, believed genuine 23.000 miles or 37.000 km, currently located Montpellier France, on French plates, am listing on ebay.co.uk because more international interest than on ebay France.
This was my own bike (Rory, Simpson Mécanique, Ducati gurus/concessionnaires for 20+ years), totally overhauled mechanically in 2001, intended cosmetic restore never happened, unused since 2004, then recently brought back to life. Now needs repainting and re-fettling, too many other projects, need the space.
2001 / 30.000km – all bearings/seals/rings/shells/clutch-plates/release bearing/shimming/filters/ etc changed in complete in-house no-expenses-spared motor overhaul (mechanic. Jeremy Petit) which included Mez-Porting gas-flowed heads and inlet-manifolds (George Mansfield, Newport Pagnall) using 900SS valves – much bigger than the 750-type used originally, the intention had been to go to 900-spec cams but still running 750-type at present. Cycle-parts de-snagged and checked from top to bottom, seat recovered etc
2011 / 37.000km – new tyres/tubes/battery/belts/chain and sprockets/filters/injection bodies stripped and cleaned, fuel hoses changed/starter-motor overhauled/new sprag clutch
Spec / wholly original and never messed-about with except for Monster handlebar (lower/flatter/better), 916 adjustable levers, 4-pot racing Brembo caliper and floating cast-iron disc (SEMC adaptation), 520 chain-sprockets (sweeter transmission than original 530), late-type 996 regulator, has nasty/wrong indicators, rear guard been shortened, all fairing screws stainless, has new Wellnuts everywhere.
Needs /complete cosmetic restoration, spent too long in the sun and too much pressure-washing/needs new silencer – can supply 900/888 genuine blank for replacement/and needs details such as. fuse-box cover cracked, earth strap tatty, trip zero stuck, needs softer front pads, better indicators, tank breather-pipe missing, stiffer bracket on LH tool-box, tank swilling out with sealing resin compound as a precaution, couple of dash-lights inoperative, needs CO2 and throttle balance setting up, no longer have the gear, needs shimming checking, choke cable outer split.
Massive potential if you fit a pair of cams out of any 900SS/M or w.h.y. and then re-chip to suit.
Other / apparently never crashed, only marks appear to be almost stationary falling-over – slight cracks on LH body-work/tank see picture but no leaks, hence suggested tank sealing. Wheels-spokes excellent, straight and true, Ohlins rear shock perfect, hydraulic pre-load fine, all instruments good save trip on odo, even the clock works. Fantastic basis for an easy restoration, all the hard/expensive work has already been done.
Will keep the bike for up to 4 weeks once paid if you’re a foreign buyer who needs to organize transport, or wants to come over and ride it back.
