Birds of prey have been used for hunting smaller birds and animals since the Middle Ages. This kind of hunting has always been referred to as “Falconry”. In Germany they call it “Beizjagd”.

This term derives from the word “beißen”, which means,  “to bite”, and which describes the hunting method of the bird of prey. In the past, falconry was done by Aristocrats,  and even the gentlewomen joined the hunting with the beautiful and elegant birds of prey.

Even today one can marvel at these gorgeous birds flying and hunting. The bird of prey demonstration has become popular again, especially since the 1990′s. Above all, the little ones are fascinated by the beauty of these birds and the harmonic collaboration between falconer and his feathered friend. It is not difficult to join such a bird of prey show. There are numerous opportunities for one to participate,  but, it requires a lot of effort to become an educated falconer.

A falconer must learn how to treat a bird of prey correctly. He also has to dedicate himself to learning  with all his heart and soul. He has to feel called to do this job.

It will be possible to visit such a bird of prey show on 19 th November 2013 at 3 p.m. . On the Feldberg in the Black Forest . upside of the “Feldberger Hof” and near the Wichelpfad the falconer Franz Ruchlak will show what his gyrfalcons, buzzards and eagles can do. In addition, visitors will learn interesting information about the birds of prey and will even be able to carry a bird on their gloved hand.

The entrance fee is 5€ for adults and 3€ for children from the age of 6 . If interested you need to go to this address:

Feldberger Hof

79868 Feldberg

It promises to be an interesting event which will bring visitors back into the past times of emperors and kings; and which will bring visitors closer to the Black Forest nature.

Don’t forget, it is only a stone’s throw from Feldberg to the wonderful Black Forest city Bonndorf . It is only a 20 minute car drive.  You should really not miss the chance to visit this beautiful Black Forest city and to taste some of the delicacies of the Black Forest sausage and ham specialties of Adler .

Whatever your plans for this day are, we wish you all a great time and a lot of pleasant memories!

Current Entertainments Guide Online

The autumn is a rough season in the Black Forest but has promise to offer some golden days.  You do not have to mourn the summer days since the autumn time in the Black Forest can offer you a lot of great events. They celebrate traditionally countless festivals in the autumn and winter months:  cattle festivals, wine and harvest festivals, saint’s days of St. Hubertus and St.

Martin, not forgetting the beginning of the 5 th season of year and of course all the great Advent celebrations.

The Black Forest region will offer as well cultural and sports highlights. This all and even more we have tried to bring together in our current entertainments guide. This covers the period until the end of the year and is to be found at the usual address .

At year’s end, Christmas fairs become tradition for the people in the Black Forest. That is the time when gingerbread and spiced cookies are found on supermarket shelves. So, we have compiled an overview of the most beautiful and remarkable Christmas fairs which you will find here .

So, have fun by planning your holiday because the Black Forest offers many different events and festivals that can be enjoyed by all who visit.

Closure in Höllental

The Höllental Rail Road celebrated its 125 th anniversary this summer. A special highlight of this occasion took place on the evening of the 12 th of August: They organized the first ride of the original Höllental Carriage together with the engine after 50 years of rest. The ride went from Sebrugg to Freiburg and was made possible thanks to the involved work of the IG Höllental Rail Road .

As for the rail traffic, it will be quieter on the Höllental Rail Line the next period of time. Altogether the Deutsche Bahn (= German Rail Road Company) will reconstruct the tracks in a three – stage approach. The first section which runs from Titisee to Donaueschingen will be completely closed from 25 th August to 11 th September.

All trains will be cancelled and the passengers will be asked to use buses which go every 30 minutes.

According to plans the restoration work between Freiburg and Titisee is supposed to continue from 15 th of September to 5 th of October. Here as well will be deployed replacement buses which will go, however, without intermediate stops. Next it is the 3-Seen-Bahn’s (= 3 Sees Rail Road) turn: From the 8 th to the 17 th  of October the line between Titisee and Sebrugg will be closed and will be served with buses.

Altogether there will be approx. 2.800 train trips canceled with nearly 340.000 passengers. So, as you can see it is a mammoth project.

The German Rail Road Company is going to replace 14 km tracks, 20.000 ties and 8 switches. The total costs will arise to 10 Million Euros.

This is aggravated by the fact that the freeway road B31 between Kirchzarten and Hinterzarten at Hirschsprungfelsen will be partly closed in the period between 3 rd and 14 th of September and 6 th and 22 nd of October. The closure is a protective measure against stone damage  which has been observed  since  in 2010. This will be supported with an installation of a mesh.

In addition, single rock sections are to be saved with gunned concrete and nailing ups.

So, anyone who wants to spend their holiday in this region in this period should travel on foot or by bike.

Furthermore, during this time you can make an excursion to Adler in Bonndorf. In any case it is worth it!

Bonndorf at a look

In the last few days the weather was really warm. Fortunately here in Baden-Wuerttemberg and in Bavaria as well it is still the summer holidays.  Some guests from the northern regions of Germany did not have as much luck as we do and already went home.

A great way to remember your vacation or just to check out the current weather in Bonndorf to know whether it is worth going is to check out the webcam!

There is an online webcam that is pointed at Bonndorf Castle. That way, not only have an overview of the Bonndorf’s current weather but also a look at the centerpiece of our Lion City Bonndorf.

Here you can taste the delicious Black Forest Sausage and Ham Specialties and bring a piece of the Black Forest to your home.

Lastly we have in addition a technical notation for you:  Bad weather or technical difficulties could cause the webcam to malfunction.

There is something happening around Hüsli

It is not only because of the summer high temperatures that it is getting hot in the region around Hüsli. The celebration of the 100year anniversary of the Local Museum is just around the corner. However, anyone who wants to is able to put him- or herself into the right mood for the celebration already this weekend.

The anniversary celebration will take place on the 15 th of July in Grafenhausen – Rothaus. There will be  proper music played by the traditional band Rothaus. In addition, the actress Christiane Albiez from Freiburg will perform the part of the Hüsli Constructor Helene Siegfried.

Furthermore, the program also has planned carriage rides, free entry into the Hüsli and an entertaining performance of the traditional family home music band from Lauchringen.

As early as Saturday, which will be the 14 th of July, the traditional band of Rothaus invites you all for the Forest Celebration into the party tent in front of the Hüsli. Thanks to its mobile four walls the visitors do not need to worry that the anniversary celebration will be ruined by  bad weather.

As early as this Friday (06 th of July) they will award a prize to the winner of the school painting competition on the subject of “100 years of Hüsli” in the house of the guest in Grafenhausen. The handed in works will be presented until the 15 th of July in an exhibition. In September of last year the pupils of the elementary and the lower secondary schools of the region were called on to deal with the history and culture of the Black Forest by use of the artwork of the Hüsli.

Beyond that the concert series “So klingt’s bei uns – Chöre und Musikkapellen aus dem hochschwarzwald singen und musizieren beim Hüsli (= That is what it is sound at our place – Choirs and Bands from the High Black Forest sing and make music at the Hüsli) will start this weekend. The event will  start Saturday (7 th July) at 3 p.m. by the Harmonica Orchestra Häusern. Finally on Sunday (8 th of July) 32 men and women of the liederkranz Grafenhausen will present a potpourri at their best.

Käthe Kollwitz and Wilhelm Loth in the Bonndorf Castle

We have already hinted at this event in our entertainment guide but this enjoyment of art deserves an extensive valuation: as from today the Bonndorf Castle will present the exhibition “Ich glaube an Sie: Wilhelm Loth und Käthe Kollwitz” (= I believe in you: Wilhelm Loth and Käthe Kollwitz).

Until the 11 th of November the culture office of the administrative district of Waldshut will present in association with the Käthe Kollowitz Museum Köln, the Gallery Schlichtenmaier (Dätzingen Caslte), the Urban Arts Museum Spendhaus Reutlingen, Gottfried Pütz Art Trade (Müllheim) and Walz Art Trade (Überlingen) approx. 35 graphics of the great and famous German artist as well as sculptures of her admirer Wilhelm Loth.

Today we can see how much he had adored her,  he dedicated  some of his works to her. Besides it can be also seen in the exchange of letters between them: it is the correspondence of the young artist, who is just on the searching of his own way, and of the sixty- year- old woman and artist.

All this took place in the period of the Nazi regime which ostracized Kollowitz. And it was during the bombings of World War 2 that the artist repeatedly moved. Nevertheless, she always found warm, almost grandmotherly encouraging words for the doubting Wilhelm Loth. This fact is illustrated by the passage of Kollowitz’s letter from July 1942 which gave the exhibition its name: “I could just say the same I have already said so many times: I believe in you.

You have to hold on; your time will come as surely as this war will have an end. That can happen after many years; that can happen as well within a night.”

This imposing and not yet published exchange of letters will be presented to the public for the first time in the prolifically illustrated catalog to the exhibition. Some of the original letters can be also seen in Bonndorf Castle.

“Ich glaube an Sie: Wilhelm Loth und Käthe Kollowitz” exhibition in the Cultural Center Bonndorf Castle, 1 st July to 11 th November 2012. Opening hours are from Wednesday to Sunday 10 to 12 a.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. You will find more information on the page of the Cultural Office of the Administrative District Waldshut .
