Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India launched Honda Unicorn in the entry-level sports motorcycle segment in India. The entry-level baby sports bike is pitted against Suzuki GS 150 R, Hero Honda Hunk and Bajaj Pulsar 150 DTS-i. The bike, Unicorn, is equipped with advanced technology and cosmetics. The bike did good for the company and regarded as one of the best bike in the class. This sporty bike has the first mono rear fork in India.
In fact, Honda uses to bring new technology and products in India in whatever segment it enters. Honda Unicorn is priced competitively at Rs 56, 680 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The company also introduced Grand Prix edition of Unicorn in India that is now discontinued.
The bike is powered by a 149cc engine that belts out 13.3 bhp of maximum power at 8,000 rpm and develops 12.8Nm of top torque at 5500 rpm. Honda bikes are known for long life, low maintenance and superb quality. But the condition is, one need to maintain it with regular service with genuine parts.
Acceleration and Pick up
The smart sports bike sports five speed gear box. The gear pattern is one down four up. As the bike is fitted with latest bike equipments. As a result, the power and performance is enhanced thereby acceleration of the machine. For instance, the machine can touch 0-60 kmph sprint in mere five seconds, impressive!
The bike never losses its speed and acceleration. However, the pick-up is not much better than TVS Apache RTR and Bajaj Pulsar. The top speed of the bike is 101 kmph.

The bike comes loaded with a 4 stroke, single cylinder, air cooled OHC power mill with a displacement of 149cc. The decent powertrain churns out 13.3 bhp of peak power at 8,000 rpm and develops a maximum torque of 12.8 Nm at 5500 rpm. The machine boasts of front disc and rear drum brakes. The front disc brake is 240mm of dia and rear 130mm of dia.
If rear one gets disc brakes, it will be a great thing for the bike lovers. For the utmost comfort, the company used fine suspensions. Telescopic fork is fitted at the front end and advanced mono shock absorber used.
The colour of swingarm at rear fork is in red shade. The colour add to the classic look of the machine. The mono fork ensure butter-smooth riding experience for both the riders.
Honda Unicorn Designing
The overall length, height and width of the Honda Unicorn is 2,095mm, 1,100 and 750mm respectively. The Honda Unicorn comes with rugged diamond shaped frame chassis. Wheelbase is 1340 mm.
The curb weight of the bike is 146 kg.
Honda Unicorn sports alloy wheels and wide tyres that give the bike required sporty looks. The tyre specification is front tyre (2.75X18) and rear (100/90-18). The rear tyre has less rubber added.
The bike comes with stylish six spoke alloy wheels. Tuff-up tube is fitted in the rear tyre only. This tuff-up tube ensure less puncture as against normal tyres.
Honda’s flagship bike, Honda Unicorn . is appreciated for its class technology and sober looks. The design of the bike is attracting and has manly look. The designers of the company used graphics at fuel tank and side panels but it is minimal.
Honda bike lovers will be more happy to see the company’s graphical logo at the fuel tank in 3D form. The wing mark logo seems great and speaks a lot about the company’s pride.
The bike borrowed the mask and headlamp from its arch rival Hero Honda Karizma . The headlamps flasher can be turned on when engine is in off mode. That means you can use the headlamp as a torch without burning the fuel. But it will use the battery.
The doom is blessed with black tinted windscreen to protect the rider from gusty winds. Behind the windscreen and on the handlebars, rear view mirrors are fitted. The mirrors are painted in black.
Now see the dashboard of the bike. The console is analogue and don’t impress at all. Speedometer, tachometer and tripmeter are showed in three pod-dials. In the traditional way, the speedometer finds its place at the middle of the console. Whereas Tachometer comes on the left corner of the console.
Other desirable indicators are incorporated in the dashboard including fuel gauge. The fuel tank is in compact size and allows the rider to grip it with ease for fatigue less riding. Honda Unicorn ‘s seat comes with lock and good storage space under the seat.
For better stability and smoother riding experience, the two wheeler company installed Handle bar weight. You can use gears easily with toe-shifter gear box.
Honda bikes and scooters score over others in competition at the comfort front. The reason for the best comfort arrangements are-seating posture is comfortable and rider friendly. One will not experience tiredness after driving the bike. The seat is wide and cushioned.
In addition to this, gear shifting is silk smooth with just a gentle push of foot. For the rider’s convince, a small storage space is carved in the seat. Tuff-up tube is fitted in the tyre for less puncture cases.
The tuff-up tubes ensure safety and long life of tyres. Mono fork is first in the class in the bike and does its duty quite perfectly.
Honda Unicorn Engine And Performance
Honda Unicorn gives an impressive mileage figures on city roads. The claimed fuel economy is 60 kmpl as per the test by the company. On the other hand, on the practical ground it gives around 55 to 57 kmpl. In addition to this, the mileage largely depends on the riding style and maintenance.
The Honda Unicorn a mid-size fuel tank the maximum capacity of the tank is 13 litres with 1.3 litres of reserve.

The rigid mill belts out 13.3bhp of maximum power at 8,000 rpm and generates 12.8 Nm of maximum torque at 5500 rpm.
A two-way air-jacket is loaded for better air cooling of the power mill which cools the engine. It saves the bike from performance loss in high heat conditions. Honda Unicorn boasts a Kevin CV carburettor.
The Honda Unicorn is available in electric start option.
Honda Unicorn Braking And Handling
In view to ensure ultimate handling and control, the Honda Unicorn boasts front disc brake, mono suspension and larger wheelbase. The front disc brake is 240mm dia and rear one is drum type. However, this combination, disc and drum, works well in normal conditions. Even the brakes are not extra ordinary but solve the purpose very well. The machine is equipped with widest wheelbase that is 1340mm.
However, that is not upto the expectations. Even though, handling is much easier due to smooth gear shifting and high class suspensions.
Honda Unicorn comes loaded with class first mono fork at the rear side. On the other hand, telescopic fork incorporated for smooth riding. For the sake of sporty look, rear swing arm is painted in red.

Honda Unicorn Colors
A sparking 3 D Honda wings emblem is used for the first time in the Honda bikes. It finds its place at petrol tank and looks stunning. On the rest of the body parts, a few graphics are used.
Like mono fork sticker is pasted at middle and rear side panels. As far as body colour is concerned, the Honda Unicorn comes in four shades viz. pearl igneous black, red with black graphics, black with red graphics and space silver metallic. The doom, rear side panels, front mud fender and petrol tank comes in body colour while rear view mirrors and rear grab rails are in black paint scheme.
Honda’s logo and swingarm of mono fork is in red shade.
Honda Unicorn Pros
The Honda Unicorn is having macho looking and has superb looks. Mono suspension adds to the comfort and one can proud on it. Tuff-up tube works well for the convenience.
Gear shifting and acceleration is impressive and smooth.
Honda Unicorn Cons
Honda Unicorn used comparatively small tyre at the end that disappoints a lot. Other needed change is analogue console. For this kind of bike, digital dashboard is required.
Apart from this, braking system should be more effective.
