National Putoline Winter Hare Scramble Championship

Houson on a mission on a Butts win

Round 3 Butts Quarry Derbyshire 28th December

The Dirtbike-traxs team returned for their final visit of 2009 to Butts Quarry Derbyshire for round 3 of the National Putoline Winter Hare Scramble Championship. The club enjoyed a break in the recent bad weather and the weather conditions were favourable with a bright sunny but cold day, the ground conditions were slippery especially where the sun had failed to melt the frost. This popular Christmas fixture was once again full and the club had the unenviable task of turning riders away, proving that entering early gets you the ride.

The dbt track construction team had been hard at work trying to better October’s helping of Butts, and with some new twists, turns, climbs and descents came up with significant changes that made a great day for the riders.

The Youth and Lady riders got the days racing underway with a 10 am start using a modified course to the adults. Quickly into his stride was Mike Gilby in the senior B looking sure footed in the icy conditions. He quickly built up a lead on the first lap of around 2 minutes over Patrick Rosney with Katie walker a further 2 minutes behind.

Throughout the seventy five minute race these time gaps remained fairly constant which resulted in Mike Gilby taking the win from Patrick Rosney 2nd and a great ride from Katie walker to secure 3rd. All the top 3 rider completed 8 laps. Jade Gordon won the ladies race by a lap from Emma Ball with Tara Johnson 3rd.

Dawson Marriot won the juniors from Jamie Dilworth, both completed a fine 5 laps on their small bikes. hanks is due to all the youth riders and parents for supporting the youth race.

At midday a full line up of adult riders were assembled ready for the start of the 2.5 hour race. The experts and 0ver 40s were away first, with 0ver 40s rider Simon Bastow from Batley taking the hole shot as the first wave of riders roared around the mx track and into the surrounding woodland trails. But it is was Lee Sampson expert on a Gas Gas that moved into the lead with Ian Shannon chasing.

Extreme enduro specialist and former world trials star Graham Jarvis better known in trials circles as Grimbo had one of his usual poor starts but was making rapid progress through the pack on the factory Sherco 2.5i, with his smooth lines and controlled riding and by the end of the first lap he was in 3rd. Lee Sampson was about 30 seconds clear of Shannon, but by the end of the third lap Jarvis was into 2nd and starting to eat in to Sampson’s lead.

Lee Sampson’s race was to be short lived as his tyre came off the rim on lap 5 forcing him to retire, Grimbo by now had the measure of the track and at the 1 hour and 45 minute mark he had lapped the entire field at least once. Mark Houson from Batley had moved into second place with Dominic Garnham in third.

At the 2 hour point disaster struck race leader Grimbo when the Sherco ran out of fuel, this left the elderly Daddy Houson to take the expert win proving that old is best, well it is for him at fifty he defies his age completing a staggering 17 laps lapping every one at least once. Dom The president Garnham with his new found fame from his exploits in the World Enduro X at Sheffield, came home in 2nd, with David Dudley in 3rd. In the clubman open lee smith won by 4 minutes from Neil marshal, both completed 15 laps, 3rd place went to Gareth Lodge with 14 laps. while in the clubman E1 class James reeve was the victor from Karl Waltho in 2nd, both completed 15 laps, Ashley Jones came 3rd with 14 laps.

Adrian Clark completed 16 laps to win the 0ver 40s, in 2nd place Justin Carter also completed 16 laps, which would have given them second and third overall in the expert class, Clitheroe’s Chris Ball came home in 3rd with 15 laps. Sportsman E1 winner was Barry James – Cox and Adrian ball won the Sportsman Open class.

Once again the progressive Dirtbike-traxs team had provided the riders with another quality days XC riding, the team will be back in action on the weekend of the 16/17 of January when we return to Ellington Banks Ripon for the final round of the National Putoline Winter Hare Scramble Championship, it is recommended that riders enter early to avoid disappointment. Wilson floats to Ellington win

The Dirtbike-traxs crew worked hard during the preceding weeks to give a special feel to the trusted Ellington course by adding an extreme section next to the famous lagoon comprising of logs and dumper tyres the club of course laid on an alternative route that would take more time thus giving the ambitious rider something to get their teeth into. The weather was against the club all week with heavy rain making the conditions difficult

Saturday started with a practice session open to al, using the full Ellington 4×4 circuit and surrounding woodland then at 1.30 pm it was race time for the quads with the hard core entry lined up the go signal was given and the race was on. Andrew Kelly on his new can am DS 450 XXC was quickly into the lead and for the first 30 minutes started to build a good lead until lap 4 when a rock stopped him dead.

Tim Clark can am renegade 4×4 was now in the lead but was soon passed by the hard charging William Phealan on the big Honda. William pushed on but 3 laps from the end he got a puncture which allowed Tim Clarke to retake the lead and go on to take the outright win and best 4×4. William Phealan went on to win the sports quads despite his puncture from Peter Heap with Andrew Kelly clawing his way back to 3rd after his early crash. 4×4 class 1 Tim Clarke 2nd Paul Taylor Kawasaki 3rd Allen Hart can am renegade. the quad riders certainly enjoyed there thrash around the Ellington track and they can now look forward to Butts quarry at xmas for their next xc race,

Sherco 2.5i Enduro

With heavy overnight rain the course had standing water but Ellington is one of the best winter venues and remained as ride able as ever and the youths were out first flagged away at 9 am by starter Pete Botchett, as the youth riders disappeared into the woods the wait was on for the leader and it was Mike the spike Gilby on his Kawasaki 85 by the time he reached the time control he had a good lead over Dan Bewlay in second, for 3 lap these two remained 1st and 2nd until lap 4 when Dan dropped back to 4th place allowing Dean Thompson and Patrick Rosney to move into 2nd and 3rd place. Mike Gilby continued to increase his lead right to the end winning by a lap from Dean Thompson with Patrick Rosney taking 3rd. the closes battle of the day was in the ladies class between Molly Howe and Gina Bewlay after taking turns to lead during the 90 minute race it was Gina 1st by a 1.3 second margin from Molly. Jamie Dilworth won the juniors with a great ride 3 laps clear of 2nd place Ryan Garthwaite with Dawson Marriot in 3rd well done to all the youth and ladies riders that took part in tough conditions.

The dirtbike-traxs team had made sure that there was no activity at 11 am when a 2 minute silence was respectfully observed. as the start time of 12 noon approached the good turnout of adult riders were on the line ready for the off. as soon as the clock struck 12 Pete Botchett started the 2.5 hour race. David Wilson was soon into the lead in the experts. clubman E1 rider karl Waltho was on the pace and keeping in touch with the expert leader as the race developed these 2 pulled away from the rest of the field and were a lap clear at the end in their respective classes.

Paul Johnson who love the wet condition won the over 40 class from Jonathon Hughes with Mark Wood 3rd it was great to see bikesport boss Gavin Linscott having a great ride and still enjoying thrashing around in the mud proving that even in your 60s xc riding has something to offer. Barry James Cox won the sportsman E1 class while Elliot Shaw took top spot in the sportsman open class.

The club had constructed a great extreme section out of tyres and logs and it was good to see riders of all abilities having ago the feedback from the riders was good and this is something we will be doing more of in the future. dirtbike-traxs are in action over Christmas when we return to Butts quarry Derbyshire were once again we will try to do something special. Take note of the date 28th December

Myers batters his way to butts win

ROUND 1 NATIONAL PUTOLINE WINTER HARE SCRAMBLE CHAMPIONSHIP BUTTS QUARRY DERBYSHIRE

The Dirtbike-traxs crew returned to one of their favourite winter venues Butts quarry Derbyshire. were the course is based on the old motocross track with loops in to the surrounding woodland and the challenging rocky quarry loop cut out by the Dirtbike-traxs crew some years ago which still remains a favourite with the riders, all this would provide a fitting start to the first round of the National Putoline winter hare scramble championship. and as if on cue the weather turned wintery on Saturday with driving rain and high winds just as the caravans and campers started to arrive. Details

Sunday was a change to the wet Saturday with brighter skies. the youth race using a modified course got underway at 9.30AM-+ Mike the spike Gilby won the senior B class from Dan Bewlay 2nd with Joe Smith 3rd. In the junior class Ben Clark was the victor from Jamie Dilworth with Dawson Marriot 3rd full credit to all the youth riders that took part in the slippery conditions .

The hard working Dirtbike-traxs crew switched the track from youth to adult mode and at 12.15 the first row of bikes emerged from the quarry start area with the rat pack boys of woods and Myers at the front of the expert charge. Dave Woods Yamaha challenge for victory was short lived on the second lap his gear lever sheared its splines which resulted in a long pit stop to effect repairs. Myers on a ktm was now out in front with Tadcaster’s Dave Wilson ktm in second.

Craig Altass on his new 150 ktm was battling with Lee Holland for third place. as the 2.5 hours race drew into its final stages there was one last twist Myers in first place had trouble with his bike he had lost the oil filler cap and the bike was empting its self of oil, a quick unscheduled pits stop topping up with oil and borrowing a oil filler cap he was on his way before Wilson could pass him. Myers taking the expert win from Wilson both on 18 laps with Altass third on 17 laps.

in the clubman e1 class Rob Dawson was leading on his ktm 125 at the half way stage when an unfortunate crash in the quarry resulted in a broken radiator and retirement, Karl Waltho went on to take the win with Stephen Calvert 2nd and Ash Jones 3rd. David Dudley won the clubman open class by 9 seconds from Kevin Seward 2nd and Andrew Gorse 3rd. all on 17 laps. after a blistering pace set by the 2 leading 040 riders, Adrian Clarke took the win from Ian Shannon these 2 veterans would have posted great results in the expert class.
