Harmon leads strong showing at Age Group Championships

Zionsville Community High School freshman Tyler Harmon led a strong showing for the Zionsville Swim Club last weekend at the Indiana Age Group Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.

The Eagles placed seventh as a team, with the 13-14 year old boys winning the age group championship.

Harmon was 6-for-6 in winning individual events and was part of six new state records. He was the high point winner for the 13-14 boys age group.

Harmon won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.66, the 100-yard backstroke in 50.98, the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.55, the 200-yard IM in 1:53.64, the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.14 and the 400-yard IM in 4:04.30.

He was also part of two championship relays. He teamed with Brock Brown, Andrew Schuler and Grant Bowlds to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.92. Harmon, Brown, Schuler and Cole Reitnauer won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:37.65.

Both relays set state records.

Harmon was also part of two second-place relays. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Schuler, Brown, Bowlds and Harmon placed second in 1:30.62, and the team of Schuler, Brown, Reitnauer and Harmon placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:23.04.

Harmon wasn’t the only one to have success.

Schuler won the 13-14 year old 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:11.72.

He also placed second in four events: the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.12), the 100-yard butterfly (52.65), the 200-yard IM (1:56.64) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.27). He placed third in the 400-yard IM in a time of 4:08.02.

Brown placed second in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes in 59.70 and 2:12.25 respectively. He also placed ninth in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.62 and 12th in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.16.

On the girls’ side, Tessa Wrightson had the strongest showing for the club.

She was the 13-14 year old girls champion in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.86.

She placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.14 and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.66. She placed third in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.91 and sixth in both the 400-yard IM (4:34.74) and 500-yard freestyle (5:07.31).

She also helped four relays place.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Wrightson, Claire Brewer, Carly Duncan and Abby Nolan placed eighth in a time of 1:43.20.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Brewer, Nolan, Wrightson and Kailie Howe placed 12th (3:47.00), the 200-yard medley relay team of Wrightson, Howe, Nolan and Brewer placed 13th (1:57.28) and the 400-yard medley relay team of Wrightson, Howe, Nolan and Brewer placed 15th in 4:14.92.

Other events that placed during the weekend: Carlin Barksdale placed 15th in the girls 10-and-under 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:18.80; Ellie Lindeman placed 16th in the girls 10-and-under 50-yard backstroke in 34.77; Reagan Mattice placed 12th in the girls 10-and-under 50-yard breaststroke in 39.10; the boys 10-and-under 200-yard freestyle relay team of Graham Asam, Charlie Krone, Jack Donovan and Will Modglin placed 15th in a time of 2:12.70; the girls 10-and-under 200-yard medley relay team of Mattice, Abby Laucks, Barksdale and Lindeman placed 13th in 2:22.81; and the girls 10-and-under 200-yard freestyle relay team of Elyse Heiser, Mattice, Laucks and Lindeman placed 11th in 2:04.87.

Sports Boys lacrosse has high hopes for season The Zionsville boys lacrosse team is poised to have another strong season in 2014. Last year, the Eagles advanced to the state semifinals before losing to Carmel. Head coach Matt Garvey said that he has liked the effort he has seen from the team in the couple of weeks they have been together.

Zionsville wins 3A State Hockey Title The Class 3A state hockey championship didn’t start the way the Zionsville Arctic Eagles wanted it to. But, it certainly ended the way they were looking for. After giving up a goal just 2:08 into the game, Zionsville held Penn scoreless the rest of the game, beating the Kingsmen 4-1 to win the state championship on Saturday, March 8.

Aven, Warner end season at State Meet It wasn’t the ending that Zionsville seniors Jacob Aven and Christian Warner were looking for Friday, Feb. 21 at the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Eagles swim past competition to win sectional Last season, despite winning their third-sectional championship in a row, the Zionsville boys swimming and diving team didn’t accomplish the point total they wanted to. There was no such problem this year. The Eagles scored 500.5 point, beating second-place Harrison by 123.5, to win their fourth-straight sectional title on Saturday, Feb.
