BMW’s K1200 RS was initially developed in order to remedy the faults of an earlier-model BMW motorcycle, the K-bike, which was good for touring but was slow and heavy. These faults were rectified with the RS, which eliminated the K-bike’s buzzing sound, introduced BMW’s first six-speed transmission and boasts drastically increased horsepower over that possessed by the K-bike. The K1200 RS retains, however, the K-bike’s aptitude for touring.

Chain and belt drive systems connect a motorcycle’s wheels to its engine. They do have their efficiencies and inefficiencies, and the ultimate decision as to which one is better is based on the user and his individual needs.

Suzuki introduced the sports tourer Katana 600 at the 1987 Paris Bike Show. Outside of North America the Katana 600 was known at the GSX600F. The 1999 model year Katana 600 featured a sleek design and was known for its performance and comfort.

From 1990 through 1997 the Suzuki sold over 40,000 units of the Katana 600 in the U.S. alone, making it one of the top three selling sport tourers for that time period.

A semi-automatic transmission dirt bike is a good halfway point between a fully automatic transmission and a fully manual transmission. You get the control from shifting gears yourself, but you don’t have to worry about the timing and other advanced skills that you need to drive a dirt bike with a clutch. Dirt bikes are different from cars in that the shifting is done by foot, not by hand.

If you can get your head around this, you should be able to competently shift within a day of practice.

Nothing ruins that beauty of your gleaming motorcycle like ugly rust stains on your exhaust. Not only is rust hard on the eyes, but it’s also hard on any surface with which it comes into contact. Remove rust as soon as possible, so it doesn’t spread and cause permanent damage.

Before you run out to purchase those toxic and expensive store-bought rust removers, try using a natural cleaning solution. This rust removal method is safe and inexpensive.

Husqvarna is a Swedish company that has been making motorcycles since 1903. In 2007 BMW bought Husqvarna from MV Agusta. Husqvarna introduced the supermoto SM450 in 2003.

For the 2010 model year, Husqvarna made a number of changes to the SM450, making it lighter and easier to handle by completely redesigning the frame.

Although BMW began producing motorcycle engines for other companies as early as 1921, BMW didn’t manufacture its own bikes until 1923; still, that’s an impressively long history. BMW’s motorcycles are produced by Motorrad, a separate division of BMW. The 2001 BMW R1200 RT is in the touring class; it’s meant for long-distance commutes and comfortably seats two riders.

Building a motorcycle or repairing one often calls for installing the exhaust. Typical motorcycle exhaust systems consist of header pipes that attach to the engine and a muffler that connects to the tail pipe. Newer systems include a catalytic converter as part of the muffler.

Anyone with a basic understanding of mechanical attachments can install a motorcycle exhaust system with relatively little difficulty. Most newer model bikes have metric nuts and bolts that are used to attach the system to the engine and motorcycle frame.

Rivaled by very few motorcycles, the 2007 Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 is one of the most powerful sport bikes in existence. This motorcycle is not for the faint of heart, however, because its sheer weight and power make it extremely difficult to handle. As the Suzuki Hayabusa’s specifications suggest, it may not be the motorcycle of choice unless someone has multiple years of experience riding 600 and 1000 cubic centimeter (cc) sport bikes.

The 2002 Honda XR 650 R belongs to the XR series of off-road motorcycle produced by Honda. It can be classified as a dirt bike. The 650 in the bike’s name refers to the displacement of the bike’s engine, measured in cc.

The motorcycle came in red color.

When Michio Suzuki founded his company in 1909, it was with the intention of manufacturing industrial looms for the burgeoning silk industry. However, like Soichiro Honda, motorcycles had an appeal. The first motorcycle created by the company was the Colleda COX in 1955. It was the first of many which ushered the company’s entrance into the Japanese Big Four of motorcycle companies which included Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha.

The Suzuki DR-Z400SM is example why the Suzuki company continues to create motorcycles that appeal to most riders.

One simple aftermarket option for motorcycles is to switch out the factory handlebar grips for new or customized grips. Even if you liked the original grips, over time the grips can split and start to look distressed. Removing the old grips can be somewhat tricky because the factory usually glues them on tightly so that they do not come off on their own.

You can remove these grips with one simple trick that makes the process much easier.

Aluminum heads reduce the weight of your motorcycle engine. The properties that make aluminum lightweight create a problem for threads cut into the material. Cross-threading threaded fasteners occurs frequently in any aluminum material.

The threads of a spark plug are harder than the female threads in the aluminum spark plug hole. Installing a spark plug off center causes the spark plug threads to cut the female threads. Providing harder threads in an aluminum head reduces the chances of cross-threading.

The 2001 TL1000R is a sport motorcycle manufactured by Suzuki. Suzuki equipped the bike with features such as forged pistons, twin radiators and a clutch that is larger than its previous models of bikes. The cause of exhaust bluing is usually a lean running engine, exhaust that has been overheated, or simply a cheaper single-walled exhaust pipe. Removing the bluing is relatively easy, however the cause of the bluing should be investigated and repaired first. Repeated applications of the processes described below will remove the bluing, but will also eventually remove the chrome from the pipes.

In 1981, Japan-based Yamaha Motor Company released three motorcycles in the 125 class. These were the RD 125, the DT 125 and the YZ 125. All three motorcycle models have sporty designs and engine displacements of 125 cubic centimeters (cc).

However, each 1981 Yamaha 125 also has its own set of specifications.

The Suzuki Intruder is a line of cruiser motorcycles that was manufactured from 1996 until 2004, when it was replaced with the Suzuki Boulevard line. The 2010 line of Honda Gold Wing touring motorcycles marks the 35th year of production for the luxury-touring bike. The 1975 Gold Wing lacked the familiar fairing. Since its introduction at the Cologne motorcycle show, Honda has continued to modify the Gold Wing, making it Honda’s standard-bearer and earning it inclusion on Cycle World magazine’s Top 10 Bikes list 17 times.

For the 2010 model year Honda offers four distinct Gold Wing package options.

More commonly known as a generator, the alternator of an engine is an integral component that keeps the battery of the engine charged. It also regulates the current to the electrical components, such as the ignition and lighting systems. If an alternator begins to fail, the motorcycle’s headlight will dim or the ignition will fail.

The only option is to replace the alternator, wiring in a new one to keep your bike on the road.

The 1988 Honda Shadow VT 600, also known as the VLX 600, is a cruise motorcycle produced by the Honda Motor Company. These dirt bikes are built for trails, hills and sand.

Honda produced the CB 1000 motorcycle from 1992 to 1997. However, Honda was selling the bike as late as 1999. The motorcycle was particularly popular in Japan and Europe. The CB 1000 took its engine from the CBR 1000. The engine of the CB 1000, however, saw a loss of 15 horsepower through milder cams, if compared to the CBR 1000’s engine.

The bike belonged to the class of naked touring motorcycles.

Though Suzuki is mostly known for its model of Ninja sport motorcycles that are widely popular among professional and amateur races alike, Suzuki has also manufactured several different dirt and off-road motorcycle models. If you are interested in dirt and off-road motorcycles, you should consider the 2003 Suzuki DRZ 110.

The competitive nature of off-road racing can take a toll on an ATV’s oil supply, quickly depleting the lubricating fluid within a few sessions. Oil checks should be performed before every riding session, as well as after every race to prevent oil starvation, which can cause serious damage to your YFZ450’s motor. You can complete the entire procedure in minutes and do not require extensive mechanical skills.

Rain and cold weather can pose an additional threat to the already dangerous proposition of riding a motorcycle. While the potholes, obstacles and other vehicles can put an end to a quick ride, another threat appears within your helmet: fog. While its not typically a problem on fair weather days, helmet visors have a tendency to haze or fog in colder weather as your breath forms condensation against the inside of the visor.

A few things can be done to alleviate the problems, some being more of a short-term fix than others.

A motorcycle sprocket is a gear that works in tandem with a bike’s chain to allows for changes in torque, speed, and power. Sprockets have metal teeth that determine gear ratio, which in turn determines bike performance.

When young Kawasaki engineers developed the Kawasaki Zephyr in the early 1990s, they were designing a bike that would get back to basics. The ergonomic and simple design of the motorcycle, powered by an air-cooled four-cylinder engine, proved a success and the bike was manufactured and sold throughout the 1990s.

The GT 380 was produced by Suzuki between 1972 and 1978. The motorcycle belonged to the class of two-stroke classic motorcycles. The engine of the Suzuki GT 380 delivered a smooth and reliable performance, though lacked the power of some of its rivals, for example, the Kawasaki triples.

In 1972 the bike cost $925.

Studding your motorcycle’s saddlebags is a simple process that has a big visual impact. If you don’t install the studs properly, though, they can lessen the integrity of the leather and put the items inside the saddlebag in jeopardy. You can also install the studs crooked, resulting in an unattractive saddlebag.

As long as you take your time when studding the saddlebags and use caution, you should find it to be a simple task you can complete in just a few minutes.

Originated in 1995, the Suzuki 1200 Bandit was designed in Japan. This bike was available until it was discontinued in 2006 in the United States. It wasn’t until it was redesigned in 2000, with a new frame, engine and headlight assembly, that the Bandit was made available in its country of origin.

Over the lifetime of this model, two styles of the 1200 Bandit were produced, the 1200 and the 1200S.

If you’re looking to make your bike a little faster, then reducing the weight of the bodywork would be very helpful. Replacing the stock bodywork with a fairing designed for racing, rather than street, use is a good way of maintaining or improving your bikes aerodynamics while reducing the weight of the bodywork and lowering the center of gravity. Good race bodywork will also give you enough space to tuck behind for maximum speed on the straights and also be build of a light enough material that it doesn’t increase the weight of the bike by much.

Most people think of automobiles when the name Honda comes up in conversation. However, Honda also manufactures motorcycles, performance vehicles, boats, jets and scooters — including the 2007 Honda Helix. The 2007 Helix came in red with black accents and had a suggested retail price of $5,349, according to the June 2006 Honda News.

Honda designs, manufactures and distributes a broad range of motorcycles. Street models include Touring, Sport Touring, Crossovers, Cruisers and Choppers. Each motorcycle has a vehicle identification number, which provides manufacturing details about the motorcycle.

It is possible to use the vehicle identification number to find out the year of a specific motorcycle.

The Bavarian Motor Works R1150GS Adventure is a dual sport motorcycle. A dual sport bike is designed for use on paved and unpaved roads. This makes the R1150GS an ideal bike for those who must occasionally venture off paved roads.

In continuous production since 1975, Honda’s Gold Wing GL1000 is a large touring motorcycle that emphasizes reliability over performance. The bike’s reception created a large aftermarket that now exists for Gold Wing accessories and customization. It was assembled at Honda’s Marysville, Ohio plant beginning in 1980, but in 2009 Gold Wing production shifted to a new factory in Kumamoto, Japan.

Problems with an exhaust can rob your bike of performance and power, as well as allow hot gasses out into a potentially dangerous area. Before you start the repair you should decide whether you want it permanent or use a quick fix to hold until you can get to a repair shop.

After extended time and use, the performance of many motorcycles can start to go downhill. But there are many ways to improve your motorcycle’s performance and get it running like new once again. Many of these steps are extremely simple and cost-effective. Keeping your motorcycle running well is not only important for the health of the bike, but for your safety.

Not being able to quickly accelerate while driving can prevent you from escaping dangerous situations.

Motorcycle exhausts are outfitted with several important parts. Among them are the exhaust pipes, muffler and catalytic converter. As these exhaust systems become more sophisticated, greater design measures are taken to make them eco-friendly and less harmful to our environment.

Wearing a motorcycle helmet can save your life but to some it’s an unattractive accessory. Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to custom build your own helmet to reflect your personal style. Design your motorcycle helmet by adding artwork, using state colors, tattoos and mohawks.

In 1990, Honda introduced two entries in its perennial Shadow line: a mid-bore 600 and a big-bore 1100. Both are laid-back, feet-forward, cruiser-style bikes. The Shadow is all about cruising and comfort, not performance and speed, though these bikes feature the reliability and relatively low price that Honda is known for.

Yamaha’s Riva 125 scooter has enjoyed a successful run since its introduction in 1985, receiving only a few revisions until 2001, its final year in production. Hailed as a practical, yet fun way to get around, the Riva 125 requires a deviously complicated procedure to remove the rear wheel for a basic tire change. Although it isn’t beyond the reach of most Riva owners, a fair degree of mechanical aptitude is required.

This job will require a minimum of one hour to complete.

Crash bars, or engine guards, are a common protective accessory installed on many of today’s cruisers and adventure-type motorcycles. While they can enhance a motorcycle’s aesthetics, their main purpose is to protect the motor and frame should the motorcycle crash or slide. Most crash bars are purpose-made for a specific motorcycle, often installing directly to the frame and motor mounts.

Installation is fairly straightforward for most motorcycles, but expect the entire process to take a minimum of 30 minutes to complete.

In 2003, Honda United Kingdom dropped the F6C from their range and in 2004, Honda United States changed the design of the F6C Valkyrie to become the Valkyrie Rune motorcycle.

The last year of production for the F6C Valkyrie was 2003.

Yamaha’s YZF600R is a versatile machine, operating as a solid foundation to learn the skills needed to ride a sport bike, while being reliable enough for use as a daily commuter. Extending its practicality further is its single-piece seat, combining both rider and passenger seats into one assembly. This design simplifies the removal process, making it easier for new riders to access their YZF600R’s battery and fuses for routine maintenance.

A Power Commander is an important tool in fine-tuning your Suzuki GSX-R sport bike’s fuel-injection system for peak performance. Traditionally, a GSX-R is set up on a Dynometer — which measures the motorcycle’s horsepower, torque and air to fuel ratio — to provide a custom fuel curve that is programmed into the Power Commander through a software interface. While this will achieve the best results, doing so may be beyond most rider’s budgets.

Alternatively, a Power Commander offers a manual programming method, using the trio of buttons on its faceplate, providing a moderate performance increase with a few tuning sessions.

When working on any type of machinery, it is imperative that you have the right tools in order to do the job correctly. Automobiles and motorcycles require constant care and upkeep in order to keep them in good condition and operating as they should. One manufacturer of motorcycles is Harley-Davidson and this brand has a huge following.

However, motorcycles need repair just as often as any other moving vehicle on the road. When it comes time to either maintain or replace the clutch on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle, you should be sure to use the clutch tools that are available.

A sidecar is a great way to convert your motorcycle to operate on slippery roads, carry more luggage or even hold it up at a stop. Unfortunately only a few manufacturers these days actually produce a motorcycle/sidecar combination. Fortunately, it’s not that difficult to convert any motorcycle to a sidecar rig with a few easily obtainable parts.

The first Yamaha dirt bike manufactured was the DT1 made in 1968. All dirt bikes from 1968 to 1980 can be identified with a 15-digit serial number. In 1981 the National Highway Traffic and Safety commission initiated a standardized 15-digit vehicle identification number for all motor vehicles that required specific information in designated locations.

This VIN can be used to identify the model year. The serial number or VIN number can be located on the head, motor or title of the dirt bike.

While hard water stains may diminish the beauty of the appearance of your motorcycle, it is the long-term damage that causes the real problem. Metal and calcium left behind after water evaporates can cause damage to the painted surface of your motorcycle if it is not removed as soon as possible. Before you take your bike to a professional for an expensive stain removal treatment, try a simple do-it-yourself cleaning method that is chemical-free and is environmentally friendly.

The brakes on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle do not require much in the way of overall maintenance, except for periodic inspection of the pads for wear to determine when they need to be replaced. Pad replacement intervals will depend on several factors, including the type of riding and how hard the brakes are used. When changing Harley-Davidson brake pads, for safety the pads for both the front and rear brakes should be replaced at the same time.

Wearing a motorcycle helmet decreases your chance of dying in a motorcycle accident by 37 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The jets on the 1998 Honda CR125 dirt bike are the small pins on the carburetor that control the flow of air and gas. Eight jets are installed on the carburetor. The stock jets on this carburetor allow the engine to run rich, which fouls the spark plugs if the engine does not stay at or in the power band.

Lowering the gauge of the jets will allow the engine to run thin.

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide is made for touring. Unlike other Harleys, the Road Glide has a frame-mounted fairing and not the bat wing handlebar. Motorcycle Cruiser magazine found only one complaint with the Road Glide, the seat, which seems softer than the Road King’s and bottoms out too quickly on all-day rides. Scott Dalgleish of American Rider magazine agrees, saying that he found the seating a little narrow.

Luckily, replacement seats are available for the Road Glide.

The Kawasaki ZX10 motorcycle is a bike with a large motor. Generally, it is quite fast. However, some riders may desire a little more power, and with that, speed.

There are many aftermarket upgrades for the ZX10 to increase its torque and speed. Many of these are quite cost effective and easy to install. Upgrading your bike can be a great way to customize and make the motorcycle feel more like your own.
