• 2006 KTM RC8

For the RC8, we brought our riders to the design table as well as the best technicians and designers. Our aim: The ultimate weapon for ambitious street-fighters.

That means: A radical concentration of its mass around the compact 75В° V2. Innovative details are everywhere: The seat is the tank, keeping fuel at the machine’s centre of gravity. Dry sump lubrication allows the entire exhaust system to sit precisely where it has the least influence on dynamics.

Directly under the engine.

The fairing is designed to produce: The least possible crosswind drag. The result: No crosswind oscillation, spell-binding agility, and aggressive steering ability.

(Planned start of production 2007)

Lighter, more agile and aggressive than everything else being on two wheels ever before. The KTM 990 Superduke is not less than a radical advance in building motorcycles and a redefinition of the category naked bike. The 990 Superduke is a motorcycle without compromise, defined through extremely agile handling, innovative technology and an independent, brand-characteristic design.

Primarily she is the absolute and offensively demonstrated commitment to the passion motorcycle.

You can barely find words to express the riding fun and the feeling that the KTM 990 Superduke gives you when it’s in motion. Just as KTM re-invented the Streetfighter, you try to invent new words for what happens beneath you curve after curve. The KTM 990 Superduke sweeps through curves – ultra-precise, radical and agile.

The landscape flies past fast, faster, much too fast. You feel the road, the centrifugal force and want more.

The heart of the KTM 990 Superduke. instantly thunders its zest for life straight at your five senses every time you start it up. As the lightest and most innovative two-cylinder around, the LC8 powerplant wins you over with its peerless performance components in the KTM 990 Superduke, offering plenty of displacement and a state of the art, computer-driven injection. So every little twist of the throttle is immediately turned into forward thrust.

And into a perpetual grin behind your helmet’s visor.

EVEN IN SITUATIONS WHEN YOU’RE AT THE LIMIT. you’ve still got the green light with the KTM 990 Superduke. Its quick-reacting chassis ensures plenty of safety reserves in combination with the massive BREMBO 4-piston fixed-caliper braking system, which includes a radial brake cylinder that sinks its teeth into 320-mm, floating steel discs. So when you’re in a tight spot, you can tilt way into the apex of the curve with no problem.

VISUALLY AND TECHNICALLY. the KTM 990 Superduke is a real treat. The electronic injection system was tailor-made especially for the KTM 990 Superduke. There are two throttle valves per cylinder in the flow-maximized intake ports.

These ensure the perfect mixture preparation and optimum torque progression in every riding situation. The result: the telepathic connection between the throttle and the rear wheel.

Engine

The basis of the Superduke engine stems from the KTM 950 Adventure’s reliable and sport-tested LC8 powerplant. Greater displacement, completely new power components, as well as an electronic injection system with lambda sensors define a new dimension of performance for KTM.

PISTONS

A newly developed piston, with an extremely light construction and 101 mm diameter, reduces the oscillating masses and greatly contributes to the agile engine characteristics.

CYLINDER

A new, reinforced cylinder with a 101 mm bore was designed to withstand the increase in power.

CYLINDER HEAD

In combination with a new camshaft, a modification of the intake and exhaust ports, plus corresponding adaptations to the 48’s throttle valve flanges as well as to the voluminous header pipes all guarantee optimum volumetric efficiency and therefore the best performance.

CRANKSHAFT

The forged, single-component crankshaft, now with a 6.4-mm stroke and 125-mm forged connecting rod, is a main element of the compact construction of the LC8 engine. This results in minimal oscillating masses, excellent responsiveness and optimum torque progression.

TRANSMISSION

A completely re-tuned transmission takes the demands of exclusive on-road riding into account.

INJECTION

The highlight of the Duke 990 engine is clearly its electronic injection. Developed specifically for this use, the Keihin throttle valve flanges feature two throttle valves per cylinder for optimum torque progression, automatic idle regulation and automatic choke regulation. This means that manual choke adjustment is now a thing of the past.

The two lambda sensors send information regarding the composition of the exhaust gases to the 32-bit processor. Combined with the secondary air system, this thereby ensures minimum pollution emissions.

Frame

The completely new, tubular space frame is similar in appearance to the 950 Adventure’s. However, its geometry, dimensions and tube dimensions were specially designed for the needs of a super-agile, high-performance street bike. Weighing less than 10 kilograms, its light, chrome-moly construction offers extremely high torsional rigidity and guarantees safety, even at the highest speeds.

SWING ARM

With a length of only 575 mm, the swing arm of tapered, extruded aluminium has a very light and rigid construction.

FORKS

With a 48-mm tube diameter and 135-mm suspension travel, the WP USD forks feature adjustable compression damping and rebound damping, as well as a variable spring preload. With this broad set-up range, finding the ideal adjustment for the most diverse road conditions is child’s play.

SHOCK ABSORBER

Directly connected to the swing arm, the WP monoshock features adjustable rebound damping. The pressure damping is adjustable for high and low speeds. The rear wheel’s suspension travel is 160 mm.

BRAKES

The Brembo single-piston, floating brake caliper with a 240 mm brake disc at the rear, plus a 320 mm double disc up front featuring a 4-piston fixed-caliper and four individual pads per side, are among the best of the best. When combined with the radial hand-brake armature, sensational deceleration can be performed with a bike this light

CLUTCH

A newly developed, radial hydraulic clutch armature guarantees an exact pressure point, minimum manual exertion – and moreover is completely maintenance-free.

HANDLEBARS

New Renthal handlebars of super-strong, tapered aluminium feature ergonomics that are especially customized for the Superduke 990.

FUEL TANK

The plastic tank of light polyamide holds 15 litres and also contains the fuel pump and pressure regulator. The tank is secured in position when it’s tipped upward, for easy access to the engine when it needs servicing.

EXHAUST

A state of the art design for the two-in-one exhaust header, plus the under-the-seat silencers of brushed stainless steel with a three-way catalytic converter help ensure excellent performance and a sporty sound.
