Intro

Ducati has the distinction of building some of the most innovative sportbikes in the industry, and the 2010 Ducati 1198 doesn’t deviate from the norm. Adding two new sub-models to the 2010 lineup – the 1198S Corse, and 1198R Corse, the Ducati 1198 is well represented, and considered among the best sportbikes of the year.

The 2010 Ducati 1198 boasts one of the most refined engines in the industry, the 1198.4cc, L-Twin Testastretta Evoluzione. The specially-designed Desmodromic engine pumps out 170 horsepower at 9750 rpm, and an impressive 97 lb-ft of torque at 8000 rpm. This remarkable engine is not only powerful, but it’s reported to be the lightest one ever used on a Ducati-built sportbike.

Fuel injection response is pitch-perfect on the Ducati 1198, thanks to the bike’s Marelli electronic fuel injection system. The system is enlarged by 13.3 percent over the 1098 model, while the new models feature a fuel-efficient and eco-friendly 2-1-2 exhaust system with catalytic converter, and dual lambda probes. The exhaust helps smooth out the engine’s performance, while allowing it to easily meet emission regulations.

The 2010 Ducati 1198 has a close-ratio six-speed transmission with dry multi-plate clutch. This provides riders with a realistic impression of what it’s like to ride a MotoGP bike. Ducati has made its remarkable Ducati Traction Control (DTC) system a standard feature on all of the bikes, except the base 1198.

The DTC system improves mid-corner acceleration and bike stability, and prevents the rear wheel from spinning out.

Each of the four sub-models comes standard with dual 330mm hydraulic discs with four-piston, two-pad Brembo calipers up front, and a single 245mm disc with two-piston caliper on the rear wheel. While the base Ducati 1198 has a fully adjustable 43mm inverted Showa fork with TiO up front, and a progressive linkage with fully adjustable Showa monoshock on the rear, the three Ducati 1198S models have Ohlins suspension systems, albeit of the same type.

The exterior of the 2010 Ducati 1198 is attractive and distinctively Italian. Featuring the manufacturer’s trademark smooth fairing, aggressive-looking air intakes, low windscreen, sharp headlights, and snub-nosed front, the Ducati 1198’s exterior is amazingly clean and refined. The tail end of the bike is fashionably high, thanks to the bike’s dual exhaust outputs running underneath the passenger seat.

The driver’s seat, on the other hand, sits comfortably behind the bike’s 4.1 gallon tank, at a comfortable 32.2 inches off the ground.

Design-wise, the Ducati 1198S Corse and 1198R Corse editions stand out. Both feature edition-exclusive factory team-style aluminum fuel tanks, carbon fiber fenders, and Termignoni carbon fiber mufflers.

New For 2010

The 2010 Ducati 1198 was introduced in the U.S. in 2009. The 2010 model is a carryover model, with no significant changes in body style or engine. The 1198S Corse and 1198R Corse models are new additions to the bike’s lineup for the 2010 model year.
