Thread: Twin Akra exhausts for the RC8

Folks,
The problem KTM meanwhile faces with the exhaust of the RC8 is – that they have “shot themselves in their own knee” with the selected set up with the under the engine exhaust. Let us drop off the whole marketing chatter with the centralized masses (The MOTO GP bikes are all working perfectly without…) – Then we end up with:
The positioning of the exhaust damper “under the engine” goes along with the 2 following major drawbacks:
1.) The under the engine exhaust technology makes it a fact that the exhaust – damper volume is strictly limited…
2.) The under the engine exhaust technology makes it a fact that exhaust gas temperatures are excessively high / hot…
And these are the 2 crucial “killer” – points. The available space and the resulting exhaust gas temperatures will impose a stainless steel reflexion – type exhaust damper – as the only single one technologic sound solution! (Hey – We allready had that one – At the very beginning of the project…)
Unfortunately, the solution with a mineral wool stuffed adsorption damper – the solution which will result in the lowest back pressure and thus with the most horses on the dyno – is prone to excessive hot exhaust gasses and requires a cat – as well as more volume and space – in order to come down with the noise and pollutions – on street legal levels…
And this is exactly the dilemma that KTM faces right now! All the titanium Akras – that are A) not street legal and B) suffer from premature braking – Are talking a clear language here…
And because the idiots in Bologna – A) have – on one hand side – won numerous world championships in the past 2 decades – B) but – on the other hand – have failed to design a proper exhaust system for their bikes… They’re still faced with a situation in which they C) have to rely on the old fashioned “under the seat exhaust” – which is D) located far away from the center of masses of their bikes…
But – because KTM has now realized that “the shit has already hit the fan” and that they have to do something – in order to get out of trouble – They have now acted…
Principally there are 2 different ways to cure the problem and to overcome the situation and to get out of trouble and misery:
A) They will copy the solution from Ducati – and create a completely new back section – equipped with 2 “under the seat” damper! But – this is in reality absolutely impracticable for several good reasons: 1.) One can not just simply copy the competitors – No way. 2.) This would require a complete re – design of the “aft” – section of the bike – And this is not possible because – the “aft” of the RC8 is the most sexiest “arse” in the whole sports bike scene… 3.) Such a solution would only be a solution for a new bike – no way to put it on – on existing bikes… Therefore it would not be a real solution for all the already “hot” customers…
B) They ask their sub supplier (Akrapovic) to create a solution in classic fashion… We can see here – how such a solution eventually will look like… That such a solution looks a little bit like the ones implemented on a VTR 1000 SP1 / SP2, on a Mille or even on a 851 Duc – is not a miracle – but rather demanded by the technical cornerstones…
But – What’s the “bang for the buck” from such a solution… It is a:
1.) A high tech, durable and at the same time power full solution – Both with and without cat…
2.) A solution in which “Marjan” and his boys – rather than the KTM boys – will have the lead…
3.) A solution where the holy “arse” of the KT8 will left untouched…
4.) A solution which will fit “nicely” – on existing bikes…
For “yours thoroughly” the situation looks like that – The more I look on these new Akra – pipes – The more I accept and love them.
Look – This is just like “JLO” – wearing an new haircut. JLO” and the RC8 both depend on their voices and their performance – but also heavily – on the sexiness of their sexy “arses”… And – such beauties can easily live and survive – with a new haircut…
I on my side – I’m very much more interested to see the dyno charts and results of the 1150 RC8 and the 1190 RC8R – equipped with the new “Akra” – pipes – fine tuned with the respective maps… I bet that the new “Akra” – pipes will – equipped with cat AND dB Killers – “blow away” – EVERY other existing exhaust system – by – at least – 5 horses. This – and nothing else – is the world of Marjan and the boys at the Akrapovic factory… They will definitely not – go for less.
Hey – and if this will be the fact – Then itb is clear to me that beauty of the RC8 will – quite like the beauty of “JLO” will tolerate a new haircut – tollerate these ne Akra pipes.
Akra Rulez – ALLWAYS.
(just my 2 little cents).
