2006 Ducati 749 Dark
The 2006 Ducati 749 is a member of the Italian companys midsize family of sportbikes. Designed by Pierre Terblanche, the Seven-four-nine features an innovative L-Twin, liquid-cooled desmodromic valve actuated engine.
The 749 is available in four sub-models – the Base, the Dark, the 749S, and the 749R. While the Base, Dark, and 749S feature the same Testastretta engines and aggressive body styles, the Ducati 749R was built as a racing/street hybrid with a larger fuel tank, a more powerful engine, and several racing-inspired components that are rarely found on production bikes, such as a slipper clutch, racing cams, shock and steering dampers, Ohlins forks, carbon fiber belt covers, magnesium head covers, titanium valves, valve guides, and connecting rods.
The 2006 Ducati 749 Base and Dark come with a 108 horsepower, 748cc DOHC engine thats capable of 59 lb-ft of torque at 8500 rpm. The Marelli electronic fuel injection with 54mm throttle body is precise and responsive, and Euro2 single steel muffler with catalytic converter helps keep the machine running smooth and efficient. Transmission is a six-speed dry multi-plate with hydraulic control.
The 2006 Ducati 749R packs a little more punch, with its 121 horsepower engine and 62.2 lb-ft of torque at 8250 rpm, thanks to a slightly higher compression ratio of 12.71:1 over the Base and Darks 11.71:1 ratio.
Ducatis 749 series boasts an impeccable Italian-style design with all-new aerodynamic fairing that helps protect the riders head and shoulders while virtually eliminating air turbulence at high speeds. The extra-width and height of the fairing, as well as the tapered lower section of the 749s body, helps improve overall rider comfort and reduces stress and fatigue on longer rides.
Like several other of Ducatis racers, the 749 has a rigid tubular steel trellis frame, a 43mm Showa inverted fork on the front, and fully adjustable Sachs monoshock on the back. With its 55.9-inch wheelbase and 24.5-degree rake, the 749 is nicely agile and capable of handling the tightest corners. Braking is smooth and responsive, thanks to dual 320mm semi-floating discs with four-piston, four-pad calipers on the front and a two-piston, 240mm disc on the rear.
The 2006 Ducati 749 is a machine thats inspired by the Italian manufacturers racetrack legacy. Because of this, its handlebars are noticeably lower than one might expect. To help offset the odd ergonomics, Ducati outfitted the 749 with an adjustable seat and variable foot peg mounts, so the rider can make subtle adjustments in order to find his most comfortable position.
