History

The MZ ETZ (unit type Zschopau) is a type of motorcycle that was manufactured in the GDR by MZ.

The MZ ETZ is the most common model of MZ. This, however, is basically two different models: the small series with a 125 – or 150-cc engine, and the large series with 250 – or 300-cc engine.

Both models differ inter alia in the chassis structure and were sometimes built at the same time.

Characteristic of the ETZ was the first time the use of separate lubrication (export), otherwise remains mixed lubrication, disc brakes (from Brembo replica of a license) and 12-volt electrical system. Like all two-stroke MZ it was characterized by very elastic engines, a very good chassis and high efficiency, which is why she became a well outside the GDR (eg in the UK) large popularity before 1990. A special feature of the bike was that it could be delivered from the factory with a sidecar.

The sidecar was removed with little effort even for technically inexperienced users, so the car was to drive as a motorcycle trailer or as a solo machine. However, this required a team framework, a pure solo part could not be subsequently converted for towing trailers.

The popularity of this bike is still unabated in 2007. In summer 2007, she won the vote of the NDR the Most Popular motorcycle in Northern Germany, far ahead of all competitors, including such legends as the Munch Mammoth motorcycle, Horex Regina, Honda Gold Wing and Harley-Davidson Fatboy gehörten.1

After the bankruptcy of MZ 1991, the Turkish company Kanuni Kombassan acquired the licenses for the construction of the ETZ 251/301, produced this, some with changes from 1994 to 1997 in Turkey and exported these further, including by Germany.

1985, four years after the start of the large line that appeared as the successor of the ETZ 150 TS 150, with which they had very little in common. The engine has been developed significantly, it was a completely newly developed frame and of course the now famous use of the large line of 12-volt electrical system. For small series also included the ETZ 125 This has the barrel of the uprated version of the ETA 150 (14.3 hp) with appropriately scaled hole.

In this version, a performance is achieved compared to the standard ETZ 150 (12.2 hp) with the modified design of the gas flow. Also the ETZ 150/125 there was either with drum or disc brake front.

The ETZ 250 came out as the successor to the TS 250/1 in the spring in 1981. In contrast to the TS it was – optionally equipped with disc brakes – depending on the version. A 12-volt system was now standard, with optional H4 headlights. For export, she was fitted with adjustable lubrication (metering).

The motor (21 hp) has been revised in many ways compared to its predecessor. The shape of the engine block and the side cover for the first time more fundamentally from the predecessor, and was now edged and shaped smooth-surfaced. The cylinder was apparently larger and the exhaust port was now straight forward / center out. By changing the height of a cylinder piston on the other was used.

Inside the cylinder, the 4-channel flushing fell (for the first time for series machines of MZ) than most distinctive feature. The shape of the inlet channel was changed (trapezoidal → oval, with pronounced nose support). The engine characteristic is clearly pointed than previous types designed.

Other changes were a welded box section frame and the front and rear 18-inch tires, which occurred here, the only time in the history of large MZ types.

As of January 1989, the schedule was 251 undergone some changes compared to the ETZ 250th A new tank and side cover similar to the smaller ETZ 125/150 series, condensed box section frame and a front 18 inch and a 16 inch rear wheel were the main differences with the previous model. In October 1990, the production of the MZ 301 launched with enlarged to 291 cc 2 3 1990 announced off-road models (OR) 4 does not seem to have been converted into the series.

On another successor, the ETZ 252, with a slightly uprated and water-cooled engine with membrane inlet was still last worked. There a few prototypes were produced but never released.

After 1990, it became necessary to replace the wegbrechenden Eastern market by customers in the west, which meant that it enhanced its model of the ETC by a four-stroke engine. It was decided at MZ for the 500 cc engine from Rotax and developed on the basis of the large ETC upgraded models were built until 1998, including the visually almost identical 500R, the Saxon series and the Silver Star and Red Star. Same time, however, the proven two-stroke engine in the models and Fun Tour was built until 1995.

The small ETC, however, was visually enhanced even further produced until 1998 Saxon Saxon Roadstar and sports star with the throttled to 10 HP 125-cc two-strokes.
